How To Set Up A Bong Easily – Explained

The cigarette was easy. One end goes in the mouth, the other you light up, and then you start puffing. Hopefully, some helpful person taught you to hold the smoke for a few seconds before exhaling, but other than this advice you were off and running. The bong can seem a bit more intimating, but after a few tries and some hefty puffs this device will become a bosom friend. Learning how to set up this apparatus isn’t too complicate, and once in operation will offer a number of benefits a smoker will not find through any other method of use.

Why You Can’t Ask the Shop

Most head shops operating in either the U.S. and the U.K. operate under some strange laws regarding the use of any type of devices potentially used for cannabis. Most shops have strict rules about even mentioning words like pot, weed, cannabis, marijuana, or the classic “reefer”.  Bringing up certain other words that could imply the items sold could potentially be used for marijuana use can also pose a problem. People are often ejected, and even banned for asking too many questions that could expose the shop to risk.

Explaining how to set up the bong is also something few will want to get into with a novice. Instructions on the use of a device are often not included with the sale of the apparatus if these types of terms are used. It’s possible often to go online and find these instructions there. In shopping online it’s also often possible to find out more information from the seller than when dealing with one in person.

The Bong’s Material

The design of bongs hasn’t changed too much in the last few centuries. The earliest bongs were made of ivory, metal and bamboo. Today’s bongs are typically made of glass, acrylic, although it’s still possible to find bamboo. There are also metal and ceramic water pipes. All will take some prep in setting them up, but most work on the same or similar principles.

Sizes and Shapes

These devices also come in a number of shapes and sizes. From colorful with detailed styling, to plain this apparatus will commonly always work much the same way, although with some variation such as less water required, or the use of extra chambers and filters.

The Basics

At the basic level when a bong arrives it might be in parts. If this is a standard device and not one with a percolator or additional chambers then the parts are easy to assemble.

The apparatus will either have a wide body, or a very thin body depending on its type. With either type there will always be a hole on the side midway up the body of this device. This is place for the stem. The stem is a hollow tube that’s either attached to the bowl or can be screwed into it. The part is typically round, but can be cylindrical. This will hold the marijuana or tobacco to be smoked. The bowl will feed the smoke down the tube into the device’s body at the bottom.

Take this tube and bowl and place this in this opening. Stems should fit this slot at an angle, with the bowl facing upward. The bottom of this tube should end just above, but not on the bottom of the bong. The tube might have additional slits, but the end of it is open and this shouldn’t touch the bottom of the device.

In a few bong designs there is no second opening. In some devices there will be a second hole on the other side. This is the carb-hole or carburetor. The carb is used to clear smoke from the apparatus during its use. Don’t confuse the carb opening with the one for a stem and bowl.

With the stem and bowl in place it’s possible to pour in the water. Enough water should be used to cover the bottom of this device. The fluid should cover the stem, but not all the way up. Too much water will mean less room in the chamber, and when suction is used on the bong the water can travel back up the tube. Use just enough to create bubbles of smoke from the tube, but not have a problem with the air pressure causing the stem to reverse and draw water upward.

Getting Ready to Light Up

When the bong is put together all that’s necessary is to place the substance to be used inside the bowl. Break up the bud so its not too dense, but also not too small. Small pieces could travel down the hollow tube into the apparatus. Too dense and the bud will burn very slowly making drawing in frustrating. With stem’s bowl loosely packed it’s time to light the material to be smoked and beginning using the bong.
